Public Relations is becoming more significant and recognized as a vital management function in India, now integral to the Integrated Communication Mix. Its prominence has increased as Public Relations Consultants focus on managing the images of brands, corporations, and personalities. Consequently, Public Relations is now considered the most important fifth “P” of marketing—following Product, Positioning, Pricing, and Promotion—adding an essential dimension to marketing strategies.

Talking about excellence in Public Relations, I recall a time in India when a girl or boy who spoke good English and had a strong personality could approach the Chief Executive, who would then assign them as his PRO. Over time, as Public Relations shifted into a management role, it became evident that hiring someone without a Public Relations background could be a mistake. This highlights the importance of Public Relations education. Initially, entering the profession required basic qualifications in Public Relations, Journalism, or Information Management. In the past, PR was often associated with “wining & dining,” but now, it has grown into a vital management function.

Discussing professional excellence in Public Relations, practitioners must handle more than just Public Relations itself; they need to master a mix of disciplines. This includes understanding communications, business management, philosophy, economics, psychology, political science, journalism, and sometimes marketing. We should be versatile generalists and, at the same time, specialists in areas like Public Relations, information management, or media management.

What are the essential qualities of a Public Relations professional? In my opinion, they should first be confident in the message they deliver and capable of persuading reporters or editors. Once you persuade an editor that a company’s, organization’s, or individual’s actions are beneficial and in the public interest, they are likely to share that information. I also want to send a message to organizations and those relying on our Public Relations services: “Please don’t only contact your Public Relations team during problems; instead, build a continuous relationship. We don’t like to be managed or exploited; we want to be helpful. When you seek our assistance, you should know what to tell us—how we can help and how we can both serve society and the public at large.

Public Relations specialists focus on building and maintaining connections with an organization’s target audience and industry media. They use various tools, with writing being the main method prior to designing communication campaigns. Here, writing isn’t just about crafting engaging copy about the firm’s achievements and activities. It also involves creating concise, clear content that emphasizes key topics for print and digital media. This includes preparing speeches for leaders, arranging interviews, and developing thought leadership articles and social media posts.

A skilled Public Relations professional would create an article that showcases either the leader or the organization’s activities to inform the public, potential customers, employees, and other stakeholders. The primary aim is to ensure everyone involved views the organization, its team, and their decisions positively. Consequently, Public Relations Managers are responsible for developing crisis management strategies; crafting content to support the brand’s campaigns and new initiatives; organizing special outreach and media events; producing web content for both internal and external sites; overseeing the brand’s social media channels; issuing press releases; advising employees on policies; liaising with government and legislative bodies; and collecting market intelligence on competitors and industry trends.

However, before moving forward, it’s crucial to correct the misunderstanding that Public Relations is just about packaging messages to impress the public and stakeholders for personal benefit. Public Relations is not the same as advertising. Public Relations professionals are not tricksters, intermediaries, or simply contact men.
